054410  PLANT DESIGN

OBJECTIVES
Students enrolled in this course will participate in the develop-ment of a process package, as an "employee" in an imaginary company, assigned to a section group. The course will simulate the main tasks of such an engineer, who will be given the opportunity to demonstrate management and leadership skills.

The end result of the course will be a complete process package, developed by team work between the student-engineers of each of three companies:  Blue Technologies, Red Associates and Green Engineering, who are competing for the ICI tender to develop a complete process package for the HDA process. Each company will be assigned one of the more successful process designs prepared by course 054402. The organization of each of the three companies is the same - four engineering teams, each responsible for the design of the four process sectors: Reactor section; Stabilizer section; Product column section; Biphenyl column section.

Since these four sections are heat integrated, there is overlap between the sections. Each company will have to decide how the work to be done will be divided between the four groups. Each participant in the course has been assigned to one of one of the companies, with the internal organization and work-load distribution being the responsibilities of the students themselves.
