Ilana Aviel
IN RETURN

We have returned to the lost paradise
Myself, you and the serpent
The place is familiar and beautiful
The thoughts flow like water
and we have lived there since,
Together in peace.

The serpent is tamed like a cat
The man as commanded labours,
There are no forbidden apples
We have gained knowledge
And our children grow wise on their own.

And this paradise of ours,
Is no longer as it was.

Sometimes I dream the voice of God
Walking in the garden,
I dream the forbidden tree,
I dream the serpent,
The man who rests in the shade
And desires me.

And this paradise of ours is open
Without the angels
Without the sword’s blade
The tree is like any other tree
And the serpent is tamed
Like a cat.
